Clinical Care Guidelines
Clinical care guidelines standardize care for specific conditions, clinical problems, or procedures. Lurie Children’s Clinical Care Guideline (CCG) Program aims to promote evidence-based clinical decision-making, reduce unwarranted variation, and reliably measure the quality of care we provide.
At Lurie Children's, the foundation of every CCG is an evidence-based algorithm, which is typically supported by clinical decision support tools in the electronic medical record, and patient and family education materials. CCGs are intended to apply to about 80% of a patient population, not every patient. They are meant to guide healthcare providers to reduce unwanted or unintentional variation in care and are not substitutes for medical judgement. View our comprehensive disclaimer statement.
Formal quality improvement methodologies, specifically the Lean Six Sigma DMAIC approach, serve as the anchor of our program. At the heart of each CCG implementation is an interdisciplinary team that conducts a formal assessment of barriers, reviews literature to identify best practices, and engages in data-driven tests of change. Over time, this team adapts the guideline to incorporate new evidence and make improvements based on measurement, clinician feedback and family feedback.
Care Algorithms
Our care algorithms serve as the foundation for the multiple components included in full CCG implementation.
